The present lot has come to auction throught direct descent from the family of Flora Martin. Flora (neé Ruddell Todd), whose brother James Ruddell-Todd was an MP for Honiton in the 1830's, commissioned the painting from Gourlay Steel.

Lot Notes
Steell was the son of an Edinburgh engraver, and brother of SirJohn Steell, the sculptor whose work included the statue of SirWalter Scott for the Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens.Gourlay Steell studied with Robert Lauder under Sir William Allanat the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh, and rose to become arguablythe leading Scottish sporting painter. He exhibited at the RoyalScottish Academy from 1832 until his death, and at the RoyalAcademy from 1865 to 1880. On the death of Landseer in 1873, he wasappointed Animal Painter for Scotland to Queen Victoria, andseveral works by him remain in the Royal Collection.

The Scottish animal painter, Gourlay Steell, studied at the Trustees' Academy and under Robert Scott Lauder. On the death of Landseer in 1873 he was appointed animal painter for Scotland by Queen Victoria which ensured him a virtual monopoly on animal and sporting commissions in Scotland. He was also painter to the Highland and Agricultural Society and Curator of the National Gallery of Scotland.
