Description:
Leonard Russell Squirrell, R.W.S., R.I., R.E. (British, 1893-1979) 'An old restored house at Boxford, Suffolk' inscribed as titled, signed and dated 'Leonard Squirrell/ Sept. 1913' (lower right), pencil, chalk and wash on tinted paper 32 x 48cm (12 5/8 x 18 7/8in). Leonard Squirrell's biographer Josephine Walpole describes this painting in her book 'Leonard Squirrell - Etching and engravings' as 'one of the most beautiful examples of Leonard Squirrell's work, certainly a great favourite of mine'. The house depicted is 'Tudor House' which stood on School Hill, Boxford. In 1926 it was dismantled (probably as part of a road widening scheme) with the intention of shipping to the United States for re-assemblage there. For reasons unknown this didn't occur but the house was rebuilt in Billingshurst, West Sussex. Known there as Beke Hall and recorded in a newspaper report as dating from 1495 (although it has been speculated that the house was post-Tudor), it was burnt down in the 1960's in mysterious circumstances, just weeks after the house had changed hands. With thanks to Billingshurst Local History Society, Mrs Cull and Roger Loose of the Boxford Society for assistance with this footnote.
