Benton Murdoch Spruance - Spinner Play
Original 1934

Description:
BENTON SPRUANCE
Spinner Play.
Lithograph, 1934. 355x492 mm; 14x19 3/8 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dedicated and numbered 34/50 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this large, early lithograph.
According to Ruth Fine, "Football highlights Spruance's early period, and prints depicting the game brought him his first acclaim. In them, he captured the speed and drama of the game through his simplification of form and his construction of dynamic compositions." Spruance made 24 different football lithographs between 1928 and 1944 creating then the most significant oeuvre of these subjects by any 20th century American printmaker. Fine/Looney 105.
Estimate $1,000-1,500
