Description:
This old gentleman appears to be very focused while tuning his violin. This oil painting, painted by the German genre painter Alphons Spring, who is well-known for his atmospheric genre paintings, portrays the man with great attention to details. The friendly face of the musician has been painted very accurately and may refer to a good character. This impressive fine brush strokes reflects the blissful coziness of the German Biedermeier. The painting is in good condition; it shows distinct traces of framing. The painting has minor light stains and a scratch in the lower right corner. The dimensions are 29 x 19.5 cm. Alphons (also Alfons) Spring (1843-1908) Alphons Spring was born in Liepāja in Latvia and studied at the art school and academy in Saint Petersburg. He moved to Munich 1870 where he became a student of Professor Wilhelm Diez. He was known as a popular, quiet man amongst his colleagues, which is also why fame eluded him throughout his life. The German National Gallery bought one of his paintings shortly before he died, and the Bavarian Museum shortly after. Even today, Spring is considered an undervalued artist!

Alphons (also Alfons) Spring (1843-1908)

Alphons Spring was born in Liepāja in Latvia and studied at the art school and academy in Saint Petersburg. He moved to Munich 1870 where he became a student of Professor Wilhelm Diez. He was known as a popular, quiet man amongst his colleagues, which is also why he never got famous throughout his life.
