JOHANNES FRANCISCUS SPOHLER
(dutch 1853-1894)
A TOWN VIEW WITH FIGURES, BELIEVED TO BE MIDDLEBURG, ZEELAND, THE NETHERLANDS
Signed and dated 'J.F. Spohler '78' bottom left; also with printed frame label verso, oil on canvas
33 x 26 3/4 in. (83.8 x 67.9cm)
provenance:
Private Collection, New York, New York.
Estimate $20,000-30,000
This unlined painting is in poor condition. The fabric support is weak, brittle, slack and undulate. Bulges and dents are extreme, especially in the center of the painting. The painting exhibits extensive drying and mechanical crackle. Extensive paint loss is seen in the center of the painting. Cleavage of the paint layer appears along drying crackle in the sky which is very unusual. Extreme staining of the paint layer is associated with the drying crackle and paint loss and extends approximately 1/16 to 1/8 inch on either side of each crack. The staining may be the result of a consolidant fed into the cracks ostensibly to stop the flaking of the paint.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.
