Description:
Armando Spadini (Italian, 1883-1925)
Giardino del Lago in Villa Borghese with the Temple of Aesculapius
signed 'Spadini' (lower left)
oil on canvas
Provenance:
with Emanuele Fiano, Rome;
Private collection, Italy.
Exhibited:
Galleria d'Arte Moderna (Valle Giulia), Villa Borghese, Roma.
Emanuele Fiano was a well respected lawyer and one of the few Roman collectors during the 1920\’\’s and 1930\’\’s. Armando Spadini was one of his favorite painters and Fiano had at least ten paintings by the artist in his collection. Spadini first painted his patron in 1923 and the portait remained in Fiano's private collection.
The Fiano Collection was sold by auction by the Galleria Pesaro in Italy in 1933. At that time the collection was composed of 250 paintings of Italian 19th Century painters and 10 among them by Spadini. Fiano sold several works by Spadini at the Exhibition of Italian Art in Boston in 1926, and this painting was sold at that time to the grandfather of the present owner.
The painting represents the Garden lake in the Villa Borghese in Rome, with the temple of Aesculapius. The original design dates to around 1797 and the lake is situated at the heart of the Villa Borghese. The garden seems to have been inspired by the fashion for English Gardens which was popular in the Roman area during that period. At the end of the lake stood the temple dedicated to the Greek god of Health and Medicine, Aesculapius, adorned with characteristic statues in the tradition of ancient Greek temples.
