Description:
William Sonntag Sr. (OH/NY, 1822-1900), Logging Camp watercolor on paper laid on card, signed at lower right "W. L. Sonntag," matted and framed under glass.? SS 7.25 x 9 5/8 in.; DOA 14.25 x 16 5/8 in.? This watercolor likely depicts an abandoned logging camp in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Sonntag began painting more in watercolors in the 1870s. This work is perhaps an appropriate pendant for the watercolor, Mountain Landscape, in the collection of the Fogg Museum at Harvard. Both works appear to be finished paintings, with intricate details and bold signatures, however the brightness of the Fogg's painting is in stark contrast to the grey tones in the present work. But despite the cleared forest and broken trees, a clear blue sky is breaking through the darker clouds and sunlight strikes the large boulders and water in the foreground, implying the rejuvenation of Mother Nature against man's industriousness.?

Description:
William Louis Sonntag, "River View" oil on canvas, 1862. Signed lower right, "W.L. Sonntag 1862" and inscribed on label verso, "...Legacy of / William Munroe / received June 1909". Canvas: 30.25"H x 50.25"W; Frame: 42"H x 62"W. PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from artist by William Munroe (American, 1806-1877). Donated to Concord Free Public Library (founded by William Munroe) 1909. Sotheby's New York: May 24, 1990, Lot 18. Guarisco Gallery, Washington, DC. From the Collection of Mr. Ken Davis, Fort Worth, Texas. William Louis Sonntag (American, 1822-1900). As one of the central figures of the Hudson River School, Sonntag was best known for his romanticized landscapes and grandeur vistas. Highly influenced by the work of Thomas Cole, he sought to depict the idyllic scenes of the Northeast with its serene mountain ranges and quiet rivers. This piece, titled "River View", touches on all the defining characteristics of Sonntag's style with its tranquil scene of a fisherman at sunset, hardly noticeable nestled amongst the vast mountains and quiet river, alive with the reflection of fall colors.
