Description:
855. Henry Somm (1844-1907)
Deux femmes en chapeau regardant vers la gauche,
etching with drypoint on Ch. Wittmann laid paper, [Bailly-Herzberg p.305], c.1895, signed in pencil lower right, Société Normande de Gravure ink stamp [Lugt 2300a], numbered 57, lower left, 255 x 305mm. (10 x 12 in), unframed.
The Société Normande de Gravure was founded in Rouen at the end of 1891 to promote and preserve the work of artists from the region. Members included Brunet-Debaines, Lafond, Somm and Villon. Between one and three prints were issued in any year, totalling 68 in the life of the society, which extended to the outbreak of the Second World War. Of these, only 25 were original works, as here, the others being interpretive. Editions were limited to the number of members in each year, with additional proofs for the artist, for public collections and for legal registration. These were stamped and numbered as in this example.
