Description:
Simeon Solomon POTENS 1840-1905 signed and dated l.r.: SIMEON/ SOLOMON/1896; titled l.c.: POTENS black chalk and pencil 42 by 28cm., 16½ by 11in. Provenance Sotheby's, Belgravia, 1 October 1979, lot 7, where purchased by Seymour Stein Catalogue Note Meaning 'Powerful' Potens is drawnwith suitably vigorous strokes of chalk over more descriptive and sensitive pencil lines which have conveyed the tranquillity of the passive face of an androgynous youth. The drawing is typical of the Symbolist drawings that Solomon made in his later years when he was living a difficult life on the streets of London and in the workhouse of St Giles. The subjects that he chose at this time are reflective of inner turmoil and psychological reflection.

Description:
Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) Love inscribed 'Love' (upper centre, in the margin), dated '21/4/58' (lower left, in the margin) and numbered '9' (lower right, in the margin) pencil, pen and brown ink and brown wash on paper 10 5/8 x 8 3/8 in. (27 x 21.3 cm.) Provenance Alfred de Pass (L.108a), by whom given to Cornwall County Museum (L.2014e) with Maas Gallery, London. Exhibited Birmingham, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Love Revealed: Simeon Solomon and the Pre-Raphaelites, 2005, no. 14. This early drawing, executed when the artist was eighteen, clearly shows Rossetti's influence in both its medieval subject matter and in the use of fine line. Solomon had met the older artist in 1857, almost ten years after the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Through Rossetti he came to know the rest of the Brotherhood and their work, and the angular pose of the male figure here owes much to Holman Hunt. This drawing appears to be part of a series of drawings of medieval subjects from this date. The earliest recorded owner of this drawing, Sir Alfred de Pass, owned several works by Solomon. He was married to one of the artist's cousins, Ethel Salaman (1869-1910). He probably acquired works directly from Solomon himself or from other family members.
Simeon Solomon - La Speranza

Description:
PROPERTY OF A LADY Simeon Solomon LA SPERANZA 1840-1905 signed with initials and dated l.r.: SS/ 1885; titled within a cartouche l.c. pencil on card 33 by 23cm., 13 by 9in. Catalogue Note La Speranza translates from Italian into English as Hope, the same subject made famous by the various versions of George Frederic Watts' painting. Watts did not begin the first version of Hope (Tate) until 1886 and therefore Solomon cannot have been inspired by him but they did work on similar allegorical themes throughout their careers. 'Speranza' was also the pseudonym of Lady Jane Wilde whose son Oscar owned many pictures by Solomon, the loss of which were lamented in his accusatory letter to Lord Alfred Douglas, De Profundis.

Simeon Solomon - A Young Woman, In A Swoon

Original 1862

Lot number: 39
Other WORKS AT AUCTION
Description:
Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) A young woman, in a swoon signed with monogram and dated '7 62' (lower right) pencil and watercolour with gum arabic, heightened with bodycolour on paper 7 ¼ x 5 ¾ in. (18.4 x 14.6 cm.) This watercolour clearly demonstrates the influence of Rossetti upon Solomon's early work. The pose of the young woman wearing a garland of roses, fallen backwards, her eyes closed as if in death, the inclusion of an organ, at which she is seated and the second, possibly angelic, figure are all strongly reminiscent of Rossetti's drawing of Saint Cecilia (1856-7), executed for the Moxon Tennyson. The seated woman appears to be modelled on Lizzie Siddal, who had died of a laudanum overdose in February of that year. The present work is similar in style and degree of finish to The Painters Pleasaunce, 1861, The Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester. An early exercise in Aestheticism with the disposition of strong colours, the arts and crafts style chair and the objects placed in the background.
