Portrait of Nikolai Alekseevich Mukhanov (1802-1871)
pencil and watercolour, with gum arabic in places, on paper laid
down on pink paper
8 7/8 x 6 7/8 in. (22.6 x 17.6 cm.)
Executed circa 1827
N. A. Mukhanov was educated at home before entering into the
service of the Leib Guards Izmailovsky Regiment in 1819. The
following year he joined the Orenburgsky Uhlan Regiment as a cornet
before being transferred to the Leib Guards Hussar Regiment where
he became aide-de-camp and subsequently lieutenant in 1826. He was
decorated for his part in the Russo-Turkish war before commencing
work at the Ministry of Internal Affairs from 1832. In 1866
Mukhanov became a full privy councillor, a member of the state
council, senator and honourable trustee. This portrait was painted
in St Petersburg and can be dated to the end of 1827/the first half
of 1828.

Footnote: Petr Fedorovich Sokolov, one of the finest Russian watercolourists of the first half of the 19th century, painted numerous portraits of the Russian Royal Family and nobility. The sitter in the present portrait is Maximilian Eugene Joseph, Duke of Leuchtenberg, member of two European royal families, Bavarian and Russian. On 2nd July 1839 he married Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia in the chapel of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. On 14th July 1839, his father-in-law, Nikolai I, styled him 'Imperial Highness', a rank to which he was entitled as a descendant of the extended dynasty of Napoleon I.
