(45.7 x 61cm) provenance: /spanThe Artist. Acquired from the above. Mary Braid Hartman, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By descent in the family. Private Collection, New Jersey. note:/span Originally from England, Snell came to the United States as a teenager. One of the oldest Pennsylvania Impressionists, Snell was a good friend of William Lathrop and finally settled permanently in New Hope in 1925, though he continued to travel extensively. In addition to scenes of Bucks County, Snell painted his surroundings while he traveled, whether in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the artist's colony of St. Ives or even off the coast of the volcanic archipelago, The Azores. Condition Report: Canvas is in untouched original condition. Visible stretcher bar mark along top edge. Surface abrasion along mountain top at left with corresponding canvas visible. Canvas is dirty. Frame: 22 x 28 in. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. (35.5 x 27.9cm) Freeman's sale of Fine American & European Paintings, June 26, 2005, lot 177. Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Relined and with stretcher that is not original. There is some restoration at lower right and part of outer lower right edge of canvas in the pathway. There is a restored area at upper left in sky, approx. 1 3/4 inches, with some additional more minor retouch in the left part of sky. Generally good overall condition.
