Description:
Sale 2513 Lot 221 ESPHYR SLOBODKINA Abstract Composition. Gouache on board, circa 1940s. 170x250 mm; 6 3/4x9 3/4 inches. Ex-collection the artist's estate; Kraushaar Galleries, Inc., New York, with the label on the frame back; private collection, Pennsylvania. Russian-American artist Slobodinka (1908-2002)escaped the Russian Revolution of 1917 with her family and eventually settled in the United States in 1928. She is known primarily for her children's book illustrations. However, she also played a critical role in founding the American Abstract Artists group with her husband Ilya Bolotowsky and Charles Green Shaw (see lots 219 and 220) in 1936. As with many Russian-American modernists, her oeuvre is defined by rich colors and suspended, interlocking forms. Her experimentation with a wide-range of creative media—wall hangings, constructions, dolls and jewelry—also speaks to the Russian crafting tradition, and her artistic innovation in these fields throughout her lifetime affirm her role as a significant figure in the development of the avant-garde tradition.

Description:
Description: Esphyr Slobodkina (Chelyabinsk, Russia, 1908 - New York, 2002) Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1932. It has been patched once on the back. Slobodkina was an internationally renowned avant-guarde artist in the mid-20th century. She was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia in 1908. She emigrated with her family to Harbin, Manchuria (China), during the Russian Revolution in 1917, and studied art and architecture. Later she emigrated to the United States in 1928, where she joined the National Academy of Design. She was one of the first American artists to explore the abstract and the first to use collage in American story books. It was there that she met her husband,Ilya Bolotowsky. Both were founding members of the American Abstract Artists group. Abstract expressionism moved the world centre of the art world from Paris to New York, where it remains to this day, and Esphyr and her contemporaries were the torchbearers, establishing the abstract as a viable form of expression in America. From the 40s and 50s she mostly dedicated herself to writing and illustrating children´s stories. The best-known of these is \\\\“Caps for Sale\\\\” Her work appears in important collections in museums all over the USA, in the Metropolitan Museumin New York; the Smithsonian; the Philadelphia Museum of Art,the Whitney Museumin New York, the Bostonand the New York Public Library. 40,5 x 50,5 cm.
