Niels Simonsen visited Algeria in 1840 which inspired him to paint exotic and colourful motifs throughout his career. Thus, the present auction offers Oriental works from 1841 to 1876. The painting here was executed the year after the journey to North Africa and is an early work in his Arabic production. Simonsen was the most sheer Danish Orientalist, and gained great popularity with nobility and royalty.
