Sheppard American, 1858-1937 Moonrise , 1891 Signed Warren Sheppard and dated 1891 Oil on canvas 18 1/8 x 30 1/8 inches Provenance: Purchased in New York by George Beston, 1897 By descent in the family to the current owner Exhibited: Chicago, IL, The Columbian Exposition, 1893 Not examined out of frame. Wax relined; expansion stretchers. A bit flat. Varnish layer at upper right corner seems to be delaminating in an area approximately 1 1/2 x 1 inches. Few small areas of inpaint in the sky, the largest measuring 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches, above the moon.

Description:
WARREN W. SHEPPARD. (American, 1858-1937). THE LOANTAKA, signed lower right. Oil on canvas. .Depicts motorized cruising yacht that won the Bermuda-New York Race in 1910. Warren Sheppard was the yacht's navigator during the race, and his son J.W. Sheppard was a member of the crew. The Loantaka was mentioned in Sheppard's book "Practical Navigation" used for many years by the U.S. Naval Academy and is listed in the Regisrty of Yachts, Mystic Seaport, CT. The Loantaka was originally owned by Harry S. Peters, a New Jersey industrialist who made his fortune as a competitor of Levi Strauss, making Brotherhood overalls for locomotive workers and firemen. The painting is accompanied by a 1930's model of the yacht and a packet of early 20th century photographs and documents. - Unframed, 18 in. x 28 in.
