Description:
catalogue note as the inscription suggests, his sitter baron de toussainet held high rank at the imperial court under the emperor franz joseph and later the empress maria theresia, where he was a privy counsellor and chancellor of hungary and bohemia. these portraits were no doubt painted in vienna where seybold was first appointed ``titular-cammer maler' in 1749. thereafter he worked as court painter both in vienna and at the saxon court in dresden. these pictures, with the sitters set simply head and shoulders against a neutral background, exemplify his intimate and highly polished portait style, which clearly reflects the influence of his fellow countryman balthasar denner. the former inscribed and dated on the reverse: le baron francois joseph de toussainet, conseiller secretaire intime / de sa majesté l'empereur francois premier, son conseiller intime des / finances, et plénipotentiare de ses terres en hongrie et en bohéme, / conseiller de cour de sa majesté l'impératrice reine apostolique / marie thérese dans le royaume de bohéme et au directoire général / de commerce, co-directeur de la caisse des dettes et plénipoentiaire de / ses terre en hongrie, né à dieuze en lorraine au mois d'aoust de / l' année 1689. peint en l'année 1759. et mort en 1762 le 22 may. the latter inscribed on the reverse: charlotte baronne de toussainet née baronne de philbert, / née le 12 gcbre 1720. marieé le 13 aôut 1741 morte a pair, both oil on copper quantity: 2

Description:
provenance private collection, france, from whom purchased by niall hobhouse. catalogue note this picture is an outstanding example of seybold's studies of old age, the type of picture for which he is best known. his painting technique was characterized by the utmost attention he paid to detail, which rivals that of many miniaturists. like many german artists of his age, he sought inspiration in the achievements of painters of the dutch golden age, in particular gerrit dou. balthasar denner (1685 - 1749) was a close contemporary of seybold and was an instrumental figure in the his artistic development. he also painted several portraits of elderly ladies, some of which are now in the louvre, paris, and the kunsthistorische museum, vienna. oil on copper description

Description:
a pair, both signed and dated lower right: Christ: Seibold/ p: 1752. both oil on canvas Quantity: 2 CATALOGUE NOTE Supposedly self-taught, Seybold began his career as a portrait painter in the formal Baroque style before falling under the influence of Balthasar Denner whose genre figures and realistic depictions of men and women lured Seybold into painting with greater sensitivity. As exemplified by the present works, Christian Seybold imbued his portraits of both himself and others with a deep sense of honesty and realism, setting himself apart from his peers elsewhere in Europe, and gaining himself the position of Court Painter at both the Imperial and Saxon courts.
