Description:
Antonio Senape (Rome 1788-1850 Naples) The house of Lady Drummond at Capodimonte, Naples; and Lindertis House, Scotland both with inscribed titles (on the mounts) black chalk, pen and brown ink 6 x 9 1/8 in. (15.2 x 23.2 cm.) a pair (2) A very similar view of Lady Drummond's Neapolitan villa was sold at Bonham's, London, 23 April 2008, part of lot 228, which shows the house from a viewpoint more to the front of the building and without the out-building which appears on the right of the present drawing. Lady Drummond, the widow of the scholar and diplomat Sir William Drummond, had bought the villa from a M. Dupont for £10,000. Although the present drawing is not dated, the Bonham's drawing bore a date of 1831, suggesting that the present sheet must have been executed at around the same time. The second drawing shows Lindertis House, now demolished, which was the home of Gilbert Laing Meason (1769-1832) and his wife. They too were in Naples in late 1831 and Sir Walter Scott's journal recorded on 26 December that he was spending time with them in the city. As Senape was already working for the Scottish Drummond family at this time, it is possible that the Laing Measons made contact with him through Lady Drummond. This would explain why he executed a view of a Scottish house which he could not have visited in person. It is not certain what he used as a source, although the viewpoint of the house is strikingly similar to that in the engraving published by Jones & co. in Views of the Seats, Mansions, Castles &c. of Noblemen and Gentlemen, Series of Scottish Seats, London, 1830.
