Baud, Lausanne,His sale, Lausanne, Galerie Sangiorgi, 31 August - 16 September1896, lot 1318 (as school of Van Heck);Purchased by the father of the present owner in the 1970s.
C.R. Post, A History of Spanish Painting, Cambridge, MA 1947,vol. IX, part II, pp. 820-22, reproduced (as by BartoloméBermejo).
This impressive panel once functioned as an altarpiece forprivate devotion. Although attributed to Bartolomé Bermejo in C.R.Post's History of Spanish Painting (see Literature), and also givento him by Gudiol, current scholarship is divided over the work'sauthorship.1 The Flemish influence, evident in thebalanced composition, palette, and construction of the building andflooring are all characteristic of Valencian paintings of theperiod, but would be atypical for Bermejo, who was active inAragon. Although a consensus has yet to be reached on itsauthorship, the beauty and elegance of the figures and theirconvincing relation to one another and their surroundings in space, belie the hand of a well-trained, cosmopolitan artist with strongties to both Spanish and Flemish artistic traditions. 1. Footnote:
The present compositions may be compared to a pair of paintings, Assemblies of Birds , that were sold at Sotheby's, London, 9July 1998, lot 266. These compositions are unusual in Spanish artat this date and the artist may have drawn on Flemish models. Theclosest parallels may be found in the work of the Valencianpainters, Tomás Hiepes and Miguel March, although a Madrid artistof this period should not be excluded.
