Martinus Schouman (Dutch, 1770-1838) The English flagship Venerable engaging the Dutch flagship Vrijheidat the Battle of Camperdown, 11th October 1797; the Dutch shipsStaten-Generaal and Admiral de Vries to the left and rightrespectively oil on canvas 32 x 46½ in. (81.3 x 118.2 cm.) See front cover illustration, detail Pre-Lot Text PROPERTY FROM A CORPORATE COLLECTION Provenance with Colin Denny, Ltd., London. Lot Notes Following the French occupation of Holland soon after theoutbreak of the Revolutionary Wars, the Royal Navy suddenly founditself having to face the not-inconsiderable Dutch fleet inaddition to the naval forces of France herself. Adopting the usualstrategy of blockading all the enemy's ports, a powerful squadronunder Admiral Duncan was sent to stand off the Texel and therebyprevent the Dutch either menacing the security of Britain or simplyharrying English merchantmen. Duncan mounted his blockadethroughout the summer of 1797 but was ordered home for a refitearly in October. Leaving several frigates to maintain a watch, hehad barely anchored in Yarmouth Roads when a despatch boat arrivedwith the news that the Dutch fleet had taken advantage of hisabsence and put to sea. Weighing anchor immediately, Duncan spedback to the Dutch coast to prepare for battle and engaged the enemyfleet just after midday on 11th October, three miles NW ofKamperduijn (Camperdown). The two fleets each had sixteenships-of-the-line but the Dutch had more frigates and also theadvantage of position. Duncan, in H.M.S. Venerable, attacked theDutch in two columns and a furious action ensued lasting severalhours. The Dutch flagship Vrijheid attracted some of the bitterestfighting and by the time Admiral de Winter surrendered her at about3.15pm., she was a total wreck and he himself was the onlyunwounded man aboard her. Eight Dutch men-o'war and a frigate hadalready surrendered with the result that when their flagship struckher colours, the battle was effectively ended. Casualties on bothsides were very heavy and the Dutch prizes, two of which sankduring the journey back across the North Sea, were all so badlydamaged that none were fit for further service. It was not only adecisive victory for Duncan but it also marked the end of Dutch seapower and the eclipse of the Dutch navy as a significant force inEuropean history.
