Otto Scholderer (1834-1902)
Description:

Monogrammed lower right: O. S.Jutta Bagdahn dates the present oil sketch to 1882/83. It can be brought into connection with two other sketches by Scholderer, but he probably never realised it in a large-format work. However, he uses almost the exact same pose for the female figure in his work "Quellnymphe" in the Städelschen Kunstinstituts in Frankfurt (Bagdahn, op. cit., p. 265, no. 228).

The canvas has been relined. Ultra-violet light reveals an even, relatively opaque varnish and a number of clustered very small spots of retouching, primarily in the red pigments of the peaches and towards the edges, and the paint surface has a somewhat thinned appearance overall. The painting is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame. Painted in 1890.
The panel is flat and even. Under ultra-violet there are only a few minor small spots of retouching (some of which have discoloured slightly over time and are faintly visible) notably in the grey background and intermittently along the framing edges. This work is otherwise in good overall condition. The colours in reality are deeper, with less of an orange cast than in the catalogue illustration. Presented in a decorative gilt frame. Description:
Lot 1563: Otto Scholderer, Peasants Returning from the Fields
Description:

Although this painting by Otto Scholderer has the appearance of a genre scene, it is definitely a family portrait. The figure on the left is the artist himself, and the lady in the white headscarf is his wife Louise. The little boy to the left is probably Karl Edmund Adolf Scholderer, the artist's nephew (cf. provenance). According to family tradition, this was one of the artist's last works. Alongside a sketch made in 1890, Scholderer produced two other versions of this motif, both of which are today considered lost.
