Karl Schmidt-Rottluff * (Rottluff/Chemnitz 1884–1976 Berlin) Russian village, monogrammed, dated SR 18, watercolour, pencil on paper, 33.2 x 42.5 cm, framed, (PS) Confirmation of authenticity: Karl und Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Stiftung, Berlin, 19.10.2012 Karl Schmidt-Rottluff first concentrated on executing watercolours in 1909. With watercolours, the aggressive impulse with which, in previous years, he had sought to vanquish the finiteness of objects with every single brush-stroke gave way to a soft and flowing language of form. In contrast to his Die Brücke friends Erich Heckel and Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff showed no rupture in his creative output after the war, and he continued with his compositions in the style of the pre-war years, particularly in his watercolours. During the First World War the artist was sent to Russia and Lithuania. The Russian village was painted after his return to Germany in memory of the Russian landscape. Graphic lines in the form of dark contours define the framework of the picture, and are dominated by intensively brilliant primary colours, applied to the sheet with varying levels of intensity.

Lot 48 KARL SCHMIDT-ROTTLUFF (german,1884-1976) ANENOMES Signed bottom right, pastel and ink on paper 10 1/2 x 15 3/4 in. (26.7 x 40cm) provenance: Private Collection Estimate $8,000-12,000 The colors more vibrant than as they appear in the catalogue illustration. With the palest light-staining, mainly evident in the unpainted areas at lower left and upper right. Soft rippling and handling creases. A 1-in. circular area at the upper right corner that is slightly raised, with associated pale staining verso (possibly evidence of prior glue/mount). Similar areas, though less evident, at the lower left and right corners. Pale brown irregular staining verso, a 1/4 x 6in. area of pale grey residue at the reverse of the left sheet edge (possibly old glue, not showing through). Otherwise, overall generally in good, original condition. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports.
