The court sculptor of King Frederick the Great in Berlin, Johann Gottfried Schadow also served as Director of the Berlin Academy. The present work shows the extreme delicacy and high finish of his draughtsmanship, a style which would be emulated and developed by his son Friedrich Wilhelm. As a work from the latter part of Schadow's career, it shows him moving away from the neoclassicism of his youth and turning towards greater naturalism in his style.

We are grateful to Dr Hinrich Sieveking for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing.

Description:
Schadow, Gottfried
Berlin 1764 - 1850 - School

Erminia looks for accomodation by the shepherds.

(Torquato Tasso, La Gierusalemme Liberata, VII, 6-7). Monogrammed bottom left: M.F..
Oil on canvas. 82 x 106cm.
Framed.

This painting presumably stems from the Düsseldorf Schadow-School of 1840.
Comparable themes from Tasso were also painted by C.F. Sohn and W. Volkhart.
The 'Korbflechter' is similar to the 'Mosesfigur' of 1837 by A. Heubel (comp.: Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule, Band II, p. 100), similar in the composition is especially
Christian Köhler's 'Jacob und Rachel am Brunnen' of 1842 (ebda. p. 257). With the monogram F.M. several artists of the school could correspond: : F.W. Martersteig (1814-1899), F. Meyer (geb. 1816) or even F. Müller (1749-1825) who was active in Rome.

We thank Dr. Middendorf for her kind support.
