Description:
Andrea Scacciati (Florence 1642–1710) Tulips, lilys, hyacinths and dahlias in a porcelain vase, oil on canvas, 55 x 72 cm, framed We are grateful to Professor Sandro Bellesi for confirming the attribution of the present work on the basis of a digital photograph. Bellesi dates the present work to the mid-1680s, the period in which Scacciati was in his artistic prime. The porcelain vase and arrangement of the flowers are reminiscent of the series of six paintings formerly in the Poggio Imperiale, Florence. Today four of the paintings survive, held in the Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome. Although the present painting demonstrates strong similarities with these works it does not, however, appear to be one of the lost paintings, differing in the design of the vase’’’’s base. Together with his son Pietro Neri, Andrea Scacciati was active at the Medici court and is well known for his still lifes with flowers. His works display both Roman and northern influences, particularly in the contrasts between light and shadow and the clarity of the composition which Scacciati interpreted in a Tuscan manner.

(lower left centre) oil on canvas 22¼ x 28 in. (56.5 x 71.2 cm.) Pre-Lot Text THE PROPERTY OF A LADY (Lot 67) Lot Notes Andrea Scacciati's delicate and refined paintings made him oneof the most successful still life painters of the Medici GrandDukes' court. Initially, he trained as a figure painter. He wentfirst to learn from Mario Balassi and later to Lorenzo Lippi, whoencouraged him to study conscientiously the colours and qualitiesof flowers. As his career flourished towards the end of thecentury, and faced with competition from other still life artistssuch as Bartolomeo Bimbi (1648-1729), Scacciati increased theluxuriant quality of his paintings. He specialized in painting richbouquets of flowers, fruits and animals from life, which infusedhis paintings with an almost scientific quality ofobservation.
