Savage, Charles Roscoe Dale Creek Iron Viaduct "Dale Creek Iron Viaduct, Promontory, Utah" 1869. Albumen print. 23 x 28,4 cm. Title and photographer's name in the negative in lower right coner, mounted to board (slight traces of use). As a photographer under contract with the Union Pacific Railroad, Charles R. Savage traveled to California in 1866 and then followed the rails back to Utah. He photographed the linking of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific on Promontory Summit, at Promontory, Utah in 1869. He joined two other famous photographers, Andrew J. Russell and Alfred A. Hart, in documenting this historic event and this series is considered his most famous work. Savage also photographed scenic areas of the west including Yellowstone National Park, Zion National Park, and created many images documenting the growth of Utah towns and cities. He also traveled extensively over western North America, taking pictures in areas of Canada and Mexico, and in areas from the Pacific Ocean to Nebraska in the mid-west. Most of Savage's archived photographs, produced by several different early photographic methods, were lost in 1883 in a disastrous studio fire. - Slightly solied and small tear in upper edge, otherwise in very good condition.

CHARLES ROSCOE SAVAGE (American, 1832-1909) Salt Lake City from Prospect Hill , circa 1870-1880 Albumen 9-1/4 x 11-1/4 inches (23.5 x 28.6 cm) Recto: titled and studio reversed out in the negative State: mounted onto cardboard Estimate: $600 - $800. Savage, Charles Roscoe : Born 16 August 1832; died 3 February 1909. Savage came to America in 1857 and began to photograph in Florence, Nebraska in 1859. Savage settled in Salt Lake City, Utah and set up a studio in 1861. In 1866, Savage photographed his 9000 mile tour of North America. Savage travelled extensively along the transcontinental railroad photographing its construction. He photographed the completion of the railroad at Promontory Point, Utah in 1869. Savage also produced scenic views of the West in cartes-de-visites form. In the 1880s, Savage formed a partnership with a Denver, Colorado publisher Frank S. Thayer, to produce a series of guidebooks to Utah.. American photographer, 1832-1909 Condition Report*: Very good condition, slight scuffing visible in raking light only.

Vintage albumen print, full plate mounted on card, titled on the border of mount in pencil, credited on lower left border. 7 3/4 x 9 5/8" image on 10 3/4 x 13 3/4" card. Condition Print is in excellent condition. There is some slight staining on the edges of the mount. Please see pictures.
