Hubert Sattler (Austrian, 1817-1904) View of Cairo, the Citatel with the Mamluk Tombs in theForeground signed and dated 'H. Sattler 1848' (lower right) oil on canvas 16½ x 26¾ in. (41.9 x 68 cm.) Painted in 1848. Pre-Lot Text THE PROPERTY OF A TEXAS COLLECTOR Provenance L. A. Lanthier, New York. Anonymous sale; Sotheby's, New York, 22 May 1991, Lot 226(erroneously titled View of Aleppo, Syria). Acquired from the above sale by the present owner. Lot Notes Hubert Sattler was born in Vienna in 1817. Son of exhibitingPanoramist artist, Johann Michael Sattler (1786-1847), Hubert wouldlater become one of Europe's leading Cosmorama artists. TheCosmorama is a type of exhibition where small oil paintings ofworld landmarks are shown in dark rooms with special illuminationand lenses to create the effect of lit windows and give the viewera chance to experience another land. Cosmoramas were mainly used in19th Century Europe and America to educate children and provided asubstitute for arduous foreign travel. As a Cosmorama artist Sattler traveled the globe in search ofsubject matter, visiting Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Italy, Greece, andAmerica. Sattler's eye for detail and skill at depictingarchitecture are evident in the present work, which depicts thegreat Southern Cemetery, or the Qarafa, developed by the BahriMamluks (1250-1382). One can see the Citadel in the distance, however, Sattler's view of the Citadel does not show the Muhammad'Ali Mosque, built between 1827-1857, and ever since it wasfinished a dominating feature of Cairo's skyline. Sattler took hisfirst trip to the Orient in 1842 making him a contemporary of DavidRoberts (Scottish, 1796-1864) and thus not only an earlyOrientalist, but one of the earliest of the Austrian-German School.Sattler's view of the necropolis is similar to that of Roberts'Citadel of Cairo, The Residence of the Pasha (fig. 1). Sattler's topography is fairly accurate and he includes manymonuments which are extant today (fig. 2). It is possible thatSattler sketched the work on location in 1843 during his secondvoyage to the Levant, where it is well documented through hisletters home that he visited Cairo, and then finished it later athis studio, dating the work 1848. Even though Sattler may havetried to create a feeling of verisimilitude, like any artist hewould have constructed his own reality in the picture which mayaccount for some oddments in perspective and placing. The threeminarets are easily recognizable: the Southern minaret, the minaretof Qawsun, and the Northern minaret which belongs to the Khanqah ofSultaniya. The Mausoleum of Sudun, 1505, is also recognizable asthe large domed building to the right of the minaret cluster, withthe small dome of the Tomb of the Amir Sawabi, 1286, next to it.The two domes to the left of the minaret cluster are probably thedomes of the Khanqah of Sultaniya, circa 1350. The open canopytombs on the left belong to 17th and 18th century Ottoman burials, although very few exist today in this area of the necropolis andtombs of this kind are hardly ever so large. We are grateful to Caroline Williams for identifying the monumentsof this painting and for her assistance in cataloguing thiswork.
