Collection privée, Angleterre, acquise dans la précédente. 'L'ATTAQUE', A PATINATED BRONZE FOUNTAIN, WITH LATER LIMESTONE BASIN, BY ÉDOUARD MARCEL SANDOZ, DESIGNED FOR THE NESTLÉ PAVILION AT THE 1937 EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS ET TECHNIQUES MODERNES, PARIS In 1937, Édouard Marcel Sandoz collaborated with the architect Jean Tschumi to create the Pavillon Nestlé at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques, Paris. For this venue, known also as the 'Pavillon de tous le bébés du monde', the sculptor executed 'L'Attaque' - a stylish and daring fountain, described the following year in the journal, 'Sensations d'Art': "L'Attaque assembles three large frogs, in contemplation before three equally large snails, each issuing jets of water from their horns." Although no evidence now remains of this installation, it is known that Sandoz executed variations of this composition for different commissions, including at least two other examples. One of these subsequent versions, however without foundry mark, and instead assembled with one frog and four snails, was installed in the gardens of l'Hôtel Beau-Rivage in Lausanne between 1938 and 1945. Another example, location unknown however recorded in the catalogue raisonné of the sculptor, depicts one frog and five snails, and is essentially identical to the present example. Only two letters, dated respectively 26 November and 1 December 1968, today preserved in the Fondation Édouard & Maurice Sandoz (FEMS), bear witness Godard's commission from Sandoz. These letters record the execution of four snails, patinated dark-green, probably the present examples. Concerning the cast proof of the frog, prior to 1968, it is probable that this is one of the three examples used for the Paris Exposition of 1937
