Born on Yerevan, Armenia in 1917, Samuelian studied at the College of Fine Arts in Yerevan and at the Moscow Institute of Art, Russia. Samuelian immigrated to the United States shortly after WWII, where he attended the University of California, Fresno. Samuelian eventually purchased an apartment in Paris, dividing his time between US and France, where he studied alongside Andre Lhote, Othon Friesz and Fernand Léger. Created in 1947, a year after his move to California, this work is among the first painted by the artist in the US.
