(lower right) and numbered and inscribed 'No. 2/Portrait of Lady Gwendol[en]/in a fancy dress/T. Sampson 2..../....ford' (on a label attached to the backboard) pencil and watercolour heightened with bodycolour 47½ x 26¾ in. (120.6 x 68 cm.) Provenance Lady Margaret Watney, Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire. O.V. Watney, Esq., Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire; sold Christie's, London, 22 May 1967, lot 692, when purchased by the present owners. Lot Notes Lady Gwendolen Ondine Herbert was the second daughter of Henry John George Herbert, 3rd Earl of Caernarvon, and his wife Henrietta Anne, eldest daughter of Lord Henry Thomas Molyneux Howard, born 18 August 1842.
