Description:
Porfirio Salinas (1910-1973), "Japanese Tea Garden San Antonio, Tex" oil on canvas. Canvas:16"H x 20"W; Frame: 21"H x 24.75"W. Signed lower right, "Salinas"; titled lower left. This is a unique subject for Salinas and a very early work by the artist. The Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio was painted circa 1930, prior to World War II. The location was called the Japanese Tea Garden at that time, as Japan was a U.S. ally. During the War, and for many years following, this location was renamed the Chinese Tea Garden, but once again is now called the Japanese Tea Garden. This painting was purchased in the 30s right after its completion and has been in the same private family collection in San Antonio since that time.
