CATALOGUE NOTE
Though born and trained in Italy, Paolo Sala was aninternationally influential artist whose diverse oeuvre was shapedby his travels throughout Europe and South America. He wasparticularly admired in his native Milan where he was awarded theMylius Prize in 1880, and in the 1890s he travelled to Russia wherehe was commissioned to paint the salon of the newly rebuilt St.Petersburg Conservatory. The offered lot is from a rare series of cityscapes from Sala'sRussian period that typify the aesthetic and cultural character oflife in the former Imperial capital. The composition is framed bythe bronze horses of the Anchikov Bridge, the city's first bridgebuilt across the Fontanka river, and behind them, the lavishBeloselsky-Belozersky Palace. Balancing the composition at lowerright is a thoroughfare of horse-drawn sleighs approaching NevskyProspekt, while at centre right a white horse trots towards theviewer, engaging him as an active participant in the scene. Perhapsmost impressive is Sala's painterly technique, which bridges thegap between mid-century Salon style and turn-of-the-centuryImpressionism; his brushstroke is ideally suited for rendering theblustery atmosphere of the wintry scene, while his keen applicationof colour serves to dramatise the late afternoon twilight.
