Notes: William Sadler, who was born in Dublin, practised in his native city and exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy between 1809 and 1833. Sadler is perhaps best known for his views of Dublin and its vicinity but battle scenes form a significant aspect of his oeuvre. The present composition is one of four known works by him of the Duke of Wellington's celebrated victory over Napoleon at . A composition of the battle of larger format (32 x 69 1/2 in.), showing the battle as it was at about 1.30 in the afternoon, which is on canvas rather than mahogany panel, was with the Pyms Gallery (fig. 1; see Masterpieces by Irish Artists 1660-1860, ed. W. Laffan, no.9 and A. Crookshank and the Knight of Glin, Ireland's Painters, 2002, pp. 195-6, fig. 254). Sadler is also recorded as having painted other battle scenes from contemporary history such as The Battle of Copenhagen, The Bombardment of Algiers and The Battle of Navarino, as well as battles from further back in Ireland's history such as the Battle of the Boyne and The Relief of the Siege of Londonderry. In forming this composition Sadler would have drawn on numerous accounts of the battle, such as George Cruickshank's Historical Account of , written with plans, maps and engraved views of the battle and published in 1817, as well as other prints of the battle which were in wide circulation at the time. The present picture was in the collection of Lord Gerald Wellesley, (1885-1972), the third son of Lord Arthur Wellesley, 4th Duke of Wellington, and great-grandson of the 1st Duke of Wellington, and attached to its reverse is a letter from Lord Gerald Wellesley confirming this. Lord Gerald Wellesley was a diplomat and the author of the Iconography of the First Duke of Wellington among other works.

CATALOGUE NOTE
Powerscourt is probably the most famous of all Irish houses, built 1731-40 for Richard Wingfield, later 1st Viscount Powerscourt. The gardens of Powercourt contained the highest waterfall in Ireland, and the scenery provided inspiration to many generations of artists, in particular George Barret.

(21.9 x 33.7 cm.) a pair (2) Lot Notes William Saddler practised in Dublin as a painter chiefly of small views in the neighbourhood of the city such as the four views in this and the following lot, but he also did many copies of the Old Masters. He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1828 and 1833. He also taught painting and James Arthur O'Connor received his first lesson from him. Small views by Saddler such a these appear relatively often and are usually painted on mahogany panel. They were very popular with the Dublin bourgeousie.

CATALOGUE NOTE
Poolbeg is a peninsula stretching from Irishtown, along the south bank of the River Liffey, and along the Great South Wall into Dublin Bay. The Poolbeg lightouse was built in 1768 but was re-designed and re-built into its current form in 1820.
