Description:

Georg Eduard Otto Saal (Coblenz 1818–1870 Baden-Baden) Family of Bears in an Open Mountain Landscape, signed, dated G. Saal 1859, oil on canvas, 108.5 x 165 cm, unframed, (Rei) Georg Eduard Otto Saal Studied at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie, taking part Schirmer’’’’s landscape class and Schadow’’’’ s master class. His artistic journeys took him to Norway, Munich, Paris and Barbizon. His preference for landscape painting was clear even during his artistic studies. It was Norway in particular which inspired Saal to depict open landscapes, using a clear structure and loosely placed brushstrokes. The exceptionally detailed realism of his landscapes is evidence of his training with Schirmer. (cf. Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule, Vol 3, p. 168)

262. CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS BY GEORG EDUARD OTTO SAAL (GERMAN, 1818-1870), oil on canvas, signed and dated 1856 , l.l.c.; 15 x 21 in. Condition: The painting has a few very minor flakes in the upper right corner. Otherwise, completely untouched canvas, clean under blacklight and in remarkable condition and still shimmering. (EST $1500-$2000)
