Boxer No 3( Mad Jock)

salvaged domestic and industrial metal components

Height

50 cm.

19 11/16 in.

This work was executed in 2011.

In 1984, Joe Rush founded the Mutoid Waste Company, an underground collective of artists who produced sculptures from components salvaged from the detritus of consumer society. These works were installed within the derelict urban environments they often illegally occupied, and formed the backdrop for their spectacular and now legendary parties. Just as their mutant sculptures gave a new lease of life to the industrial and domestic scrap materials from which they were formed, the abandoned redundant industrial spaces that housed them were re-invigorated through music and performance based arts. In the late 1980s when facing continued pressure from the police, Joe Rush and the Company set about travelling across Europe embarking on ever more ambitious projects. In 1991 he constructed Tankhenge , an installation made of abandoned Soviet tanks and based on the stone circles at Stonehenge. This work was sited at the No Man's Land that had once existed between the East and West sides of the Berlin Wall. At the Tacheles warehouse in the city he also created the Silver Bird of Peace from a Russian Mig 21 fighter plane. Furthermore he has also worked extensively on the Festival circuit for the past twenty five years, with his recent Unfair Ground at Glastonbury voted best Festival field by the Telegraph Newspaper in 2011. At the request of Banksy his sculptures were included at Santa's Ghetto and MuTATE Britain. He has also exhibited in Gloucester Cathedral alongside such luminaries as Damien Hirst, Lynn Chadwick and Antony Gormley. A true Mutoid, Joe Rush lives surrounded by his creations in a scrap yard in West London. For a whole generation of British artists, he embodies the underground ideal. This work incorporates a number of domestic and industrial metal objects including a gravy boat, drill pieces, coffee pots, an air gun and a Chevrolet rocker engine.
