FERDINAND VICTOR LÉON ROYBET

(french 1840-1920)

CAVALIER IN INTERIOR

Signed 'F. Roybet' bottom left, oil on panel

12 5/8 x 8 in. (32.1 x 20.3cm)

provenance:

Frederick W. Thom Gallery Ltd., Toronto, Canada.

The Estate of James E. Cushing Jr.

The top portion of the panel is comprised of an attached approx. 1/4 inch wide strip of added wood with associated fill (this added strip is part of the painted surface). Overall the painting has uneven/residual varnish, making an accurate reading of the painting under u.v. light somewhat difficult. There is, however, some restoration at lower right and lower center right, and some retouch to parts of lower 1/3 of jacket, areas of the background, part of the hat, parts of the back of head/armor neckwear and areas surrounding.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

He eventually taught at a girls school in Stamford, Connecticut, which Plummer attended. The two wedded in 1869. Together they had three children.
