Description:
Helen Rousseau (1896-1992) Boats on the Shore signed 'H. Rousseau' (lower right) oil and charcoal on board 40 x 38 in. (101.6 x 96.5 cm) Footnotes Provenance Gerald Sauer Fine Art, Carmel. Acquired from the above by the present owner. Helen Rousseau's early style was greatly informed by the modernist works of Otis Oldfield, one of her teachers at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco in the early 1920s. It wasn't until she returned to the CSFA in 1951 and came under the tutelage of David Park that Rousseau's focus began to shift from paintings of familiar Bay Area landscapes to the more abstract, figurative style espoused by Park, and for which she would come to be known. Though over time she would forge her own path within the Bay Area Figurative Movement, Rousseau's mature works are clearly indebted to Park's experimental blend of figurative primacy and Abstract Expressionism.
