Description:
Adèle Romany (? 1769-1846 Paris) Portrait of a lady, three-quarter length, at a pianoforte holding a manuscript signed 'Adl Romany' (lower left) oil on canvas 51 x 37 in. (129.5 x 93.9 cm.) inscribed 'RECUEIL DE ROMANCES PAR GARAT JEUNE Son Ami ZUASNAVAR Enregistré à la Biblioth... Auteur Fabry Garat' (on the manuscript); and inscribed 'Èrard et Fr Privilégiée du Roi à Paris' (on the pianoforte)
Please note that the cataloguing for this lot should read: inscribed 'RECUEIL DE ROMANCES PAR GARAT JEUNE Son Ami ZUASNAVAR Enregistré à la Biblioth Auteur Fabry Garat' (on the manuscript); and inscribed ' Érard et Fr Privilégiée du Roi à Paris ' (on the pianoforte) The inscription on the pianoforte reveals it was manufactured by Sébastien Érard, one of the preeminent piano makers of the 19th century whose renowned instruments were owned by Beethoven, Chopin, Haydn, Liszt, and Verdi. The present inscription corresponds to those on similar Érard pianos made in the early 1790s: 'Sébastién Érard et Fréré Compag. Priviligiée du Roi. Rue du Mail No. 37 à Paris', so it is possible that the instrument depicted here was made around that date. Although Érard worked in both London and Paris, the inscription on this pianoforte indicates it was made in the latter city at the firm Érard Frères & Co., which Sébastien owned with his brother Jean-Baptiste. A similar pianoforte can be seen in De Romany's Portrait of the Artist's Family in front of the Château de Juilly of 1804 at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie.

Property from a Private Florida Collection
This newly discovered, previously unpublished portrait of a young woman at a pianoforte is the pendant to a fine portrait also by Adèle Romany of the singer and composer Joseph (or Jean) Dominique Fabry-Garat (1774-?) playing a lyre that was recently acquired by the Museum of Fine-Arts, Boston (inv. 2009.344). Both portraits are signed by the artist, of the same dimensions, and are composed to face-in and complement each other. The portrait of Fabry-Garat was exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1808 (no. 532), where it was catalogued as 'M. F.y G.s'accompagnant de la lyre'.

Fabry-Garat was born in Bordeaux in 1774 (or 1775) to a distinguished attorney, Dominique Garat (who was a deputy of the Third Estate during the Revolution), and the daughter of a surgeon. He studied with Mengozzi, Ferrari and Gerard and was a popular tenor who performed with his brother, Pierre-Jean Garat, a celebrated baritone of the early 19th century. Fabry-Garat was also a successful singing teacher and composer, who specialized in 'compositions des romances' and songs with Anacreontic themes. He published eight 'recueil de romances et pièces fugitives' that were meant to be performed jointly on the lyre and pianoforte. Few intimate details of his life are known and it has not been established if he was married.

Unfortunately, the present portrait was not exhibited in the Salon with its companion piece, so the sitter's identity can only be surmised by clues included in the painting itself. The young lady stands before a pianoforte, idly fingering its keys; a music book sits on the instrument and she holds a musical manuscript at her side on which can clearly be read: 'RECUEIL/DE/ROMANCES/PAR/GARAT JEUNE'. Beneath this inscription, less legibly, is a dedication to 'son ami ZUASNAVAR' and a further identification of the musical score as by 'Auteur Fabry Garat'. The identity of the friend and dedicatee Zuasnavar has not been determined, but one may presume that the sitter is Fabry-Garat's wife, companion or a fellow singer who regularly performed his songs.

Adèle Romany, also known as Adèle de Romance or Adèle Romanée, was born Jeanne-Marie Mercier in 1769. She was the daughter of the marquis de Romance (a captain of the guard) and Jeanne-Marie Mercier, who was a married woman at the time that Adèle was conceived. At the age of nine she was recognized by her father and it was then that she adopted his name, Romance (she subsequently also changed her first name -- substituting her mother's name with her chosen name, Adèle), it was thus that she began her career as an artist. An unhappy marriage to the miniature painter François-Antoine Romany in 1790 resulted in the birth of a daughter; two more children were born after her divorce from Romany in 1793. Adèle Romany trained in a studio for female artists in Paris, directed by the wife of Jean-Baptiste Regnault. She exhibited widely at the Salon between 1793 and 1833 and is best known for her portraits of fellow artists, celebrated dancers and other fashionable sitters.

CATALOGUE NOTE
The sitter of this portrait Auguste Vestris (1760-1842) was known as 'the god of dance'. After his debut at the age of twelve, his talent was immediately spotted and by the age of 16 had become premier sujet at the opera. During the revolution he fled to London but returned to Paris in 1793. After his retirement he successfuly trained numerous famous dancers. The present painting may be dated to the early to the mid-1790s, once Vestris had returned to Paris. The likeness may be compared to a portrait of Vestris by Gainsborough in Tate Britain, London (see "Thomas Gainsborough's 'Lost' Portrait of Auguste Vestris", in The British Art Journal, Spring 2003, vol. IV, no. 1, pp. 64-68).
