Adèle Romany, also known as Adèle de Romance or Adèle Romanée,was born Jeanne-Marie Mercier in 1769. She was the daughter of themarquis de Romance (a captain of the guard) and Jeanne-MarieMercier, who was a married woman at the time that Adèle wasconceived. At the age of nine she was recognized by her father andit was then that she adopted his name, Romance (she subsequentlyalso changed her first name -- substituting her mother's name withher chosen name, Adèle), it was thus that she began her career asan artist. An unhappy marriage to the miniature painterFrançois-Antoine Romany in 1790 resulted in the birth of adaughter; two more children were born after her divorce from Romanyin 1793. Adèle Romany trained in a studio for female artists inParis, directed by the wife of Jean-Baptiste Regnault. Sheexhibited widely at the Salon between 1793 and 1833 and is bestknown for her portraits of fellow artists, celebrated dancers andother fashionable sitters. The present group portrait or 'conversation piece', dated 1807, isrepresentative of the early, formal portraits produced by theartist when the influence of Regnault is most evident. Thisportrait is unrecorded and does not appear to have been exhibitedat the Salon; the sitters have therefore yet to be identified. Asimilar portrait of 1804, representing members of Adèle Romany'sfamily (cousins from her mother's side) was sold at Christie's,Paris, 26 June 2008, lot 76 (for Euro 66,500). Critics praisedRomany's works in the first decade of the nineteenth century fortheir 'life-like appearance' and 'grace'.

Lot Notes
Adèle de Romance, also known as Madame Romany or Madame Romanée, was born Jeanne Marie Mercier, illegitimate daughter of the Marquis de Romance, a former captain of the guards, and Jeanne-Marie Bernardine Mercier. In 1790 she married the miniature painter François Antoine Romany. She was a student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault and exhibited regularly at the Salon, from 1793 until 1806 under the name 'Romany' and from 1808 to 1833 under the pseudonym "Romanée". Although she painted some genre and historical scenes, Romany is primarily known as a portrait painter, particularly for her portraits of actors and singers.
