Franz Wolfgang Rohrich (Nürnberg 1787-1834) Portrait of a lady and her son, traditionally identified as Sibylle of Cleves (1512-1554) and one of her sons: the lady, three-quarter-length, in a gold-embroidered dress and a jeweled hat, and the son, half-length, in an ermine-trimmed red coat and a jeweled red hat oil on panel 24 x 18 ½ in. (61 x 47 cm.)

Male portrait, with coat of arms at lower right,

oil on panel, 60.5 x 42 cm, framed

Exhibited: Diözesanmuseum, Vienna, Religiöse Malerei 15.–18. Jahrhundert, temporary exhibition, 1966 (according to a paper label on the reverse side of the painting).

A further version of this portrait, yet without the coat of arms, was sold at Lempertz, Cologne, on 25 September 2013 as lot 112, together with its female pendant (as portrait of Elector John Frederick of Saxon and Electress Sibylla).

Rohrich had specialized in the manner of Old Masters and frequently harked back to Lucas Cranach the Elder for a model.

Franz Wolfgang Rohrich invented paintings in the manner of Cranach and Dürer without copying a prototype. Various versions of this double portrait in the manner of Lucas Cranach I, are known, one of them in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 1185). Another version was sold at Sotheby's, Paris, 22 September 2010, lot 44 (EUR 36,750).
