This painting on fabric has been glue-lined and mounted on a new stretcher. The paint layer is well-adhered to the fabric support. It exhibits a typical stretching tension pattern of age/mechanical crackle as well as several sigmoid or spider-web shaped cracks. These sigmoid cracks are the result of blows suffered by the painting at some point in the past. Examination in UV light indicates a synthetic resin varnish applied over remnants of an earlier natural resin varnish. This is the result of the painting having been carefully cleaned with the varnish reduced but not completely removed in the most sensitive areas. Careful inpainting of a moderate amount is scattered throughout though the lower few inches of the painting are more heavily retouched.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.
