Description:
ALEXANDER IGNATIUS ROCHE RSA (SCOTTISH 1861 - 1921) THE RETURNING BOAT oil on panel, signed 'Alexander Roche' (lower right) 25.5 x 32 cm (10 1/16 x 12 5/8 inches). Provenance : Aitken Dott gallery label verso Note : He won a gold medal at Munich 1891, an Hon. Mention at the Paris Salon 1892 and a gold medal at Dresden 1897. Elected ARSA 1894 and RSA 1900, he exhibited at the RSA from 1887 - 1916 and at the RA from 1890 - 1919. Roche is considered a member of the Glasgow School. Early writers on Alexander Roche attributed his 'romantic blood' to the fact that his father was French and his mother hailed from the Borders. Although five years younger than Lavery, his friendship with the painter predates their studentship in Paris, where Roche not only worked at Julian's, but was for a time, a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme. By 1890 Roche was exploring Italy, spending his summer at the village of Anticoli in the Sabine hills. In the autumn of 1892 he and Lavery travelled to Munich, Basle and Venice.

Roche was considered a member of the Glasgow School, but after the late 1880s he drifted to the fringes of the movement. In 1906, he remarried, to Jean, daughter of the animal painter Robert Alexander and sister of Edwin, the flower and animal painter. All four shared a friendship with Joseph Crawhall, together with a love of Tangier. They lived from 1907 until the outbreak of the Great War at 8 Royal Terrace in Edinburgh and around this time he was struck with a cerebral haemorrhage which paralysed his right hand. He taught himself to paint with his left and was later to produce some of his best landscapes

Description:
Alexander Ignatius Roche R.S.A (1861-1921)
oil on board,
The Coming of Spring,
signed, label verso,
14 x 22in.
Some slight bowing outwards at the centre of the panel, but otherwise in good untouched condition, rather dirty and would certainly benefit from a clean, signed lower left, in probably the original ornate gilt gesso frame which has suffered some small losses.
