Footnotes

In addition to the present lot, two portrait miniatures of Frederick Stewart as a boy and a young man attributed to the 'British School' are held by the National Trust (Inv. Nos.1220845 and 159517 respectively). Stewart also appears as one of the many politicians in 'The House of Commons' by Sir George Hayter (1833), which is held by the National Portrait Gallery in London (Inv. No.54). In 1812, Sir Thomas Lawrence painted portraits of Stewart and his father; the latter is with the NPG (Inv. No.6171).

Born at Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, Frederick Stewart was the only child of Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854) by his first wife Lady Catherine Bligh (d.1812). He had six half-siblings by his father's second wife, Lady Frances Anne Emily Vane-Tempest (d.1865). His mother died when he was seven and while his father was serving in the army overseas, Stewart was looked after by his uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Castlereagh. He was educated at Eton between 1814-1820 and sat as MP for County Down between 1826-1852. He later served as a Lord of the Admiralty under the Duke of Wellington between 1828-1830 and briefly as Vice-Chamberlain of the Household under Sir Robert Peel between 1834-1835. From 1845-1864, he served as Lord Lieutenant of Down and in 1856, he was made a Knight of the Order of St Patrick.

At the British Embassy in Paris on 2 May 1846, Stewart married Lady Elizabeth Frances Charlotte Jocelyn (d.1884), widow of Richard Wingfield, 6th Viscount Powerscourt (1815-1844) and the eldest of six children born to Robert Jocelyn, 3rd Earl of Roden (1788-1870). The couple had no children of their own but Lady Elizabeth had three sons from her first marriage: Mervyn, 7th Viscount Powerscourt (1836-1904), Maurice (1839-1866) and Lewis (1842-1891). Aged 67, Stewart died at the White Rock Villa in Hastings and was succeeded in the marquessate by his half-brother, George Vane-Tempest, 2nd Earl Vane KP (1821-1884). The Marchioness of Londonderry died on 2 September 1884, aged 70 and is buried alongside her husband in Newtownards.
