Lot Notes
Denmark Hall, an upmarket entertainment hall apparently namedafter a visit by Prince George of Denmark in 1768, is depicted inthe centre foreground. The building was later to be converted intoprivate residences. The London townscape in the background extendsfrom St. John the Evangelist Smith Square on the left to SouthwarkCathedral and the Tower of London on the right. In the distance arethe Northern Heights crowned by Hampstead and Highgate.
Robertson and Lerpinire engraved a companion oval view of Londonand Westminster seen from Hampstead Heath near the Spaniardstavern, which was published by John Boydell in 1780. Robertson hadstudied at Shipley's Academy and in Rome before accompanyingWilliam Beckford of Somerley Hall, Suffolk, to Jamaica in 1774. Hepainted a number of topographical views, many of which wereengraved, and exhibited mainly at The Society of Artists.
