Mørket er ved at folde sig ud over et vidtstrakt Landskab med en Sø i Forgrunden. En Kvinde har træt sat sig til at hvile i Vejkanten. I luften ses Døden som en svævende Skygge" (Evening. The dark is unfolding over a vast landscape with a lake in the foreground. A tired woman is resting at the roadside. In the air, death is seen as a floating shadow.\” That one with the measurements 118×94. H. Chr. Christensen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of L. A. Ring no. 98). Description:
“En Høstpige. Midt i en Kornmark staar hun; med Straahat, hvidt Forklæde over en lyseblå Kjole og et Neg i Favnen\”. Young woman harvesting. In the midst of a cornfield, she is wearing a straw hat, a white apron over a light blue dress and a sheaf in her hands. Signed and dated L. A. Ring 89. Oil on canvas. 120×92 cm. H. Chr. Christensen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of L. A. Ring no. 167. Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, \“Arbejder af L. A. Ring\”, 1924 no. 71. Charlottenborg, \“Mindeudstillingen for L. A. Ring\”, 1933 no. 76. Literature: Peter Hertz, \“Maleren L. A. Ring\”, 1934, mentioned p. 198 and reproduced p. 199. The painting was on the cover of the magazine \“Tidens Kvinder\” no. 32, 11 August 1959. Provenance: Editor Robert Henriques (1910). The harvest motif has clearly fascinated L.A. Ring. One of his main works \“Harvest\” (The National Gallery of Denmark, DEP289) from 1885 depicts a hard-working agricultural labourer dressed in worn-out clothes and completely surrounded by the yellow and ripe grain field, which he is harvesting with a large scythe – death is always a latent presence in Ring\’s paintings. The role model is the French painter Jean-François Millet, one of the main figures of the Barbizon School. At the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Ring has been able to study Millet's "Death and the Woodcutter\” (Inv. No. MIN 0972), which the Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen acquired in 1878. It would be natural to compare \“A Harvest Girl\” with "Harvest.\” The same high horizon and rolling golden seas of grain fields fill a large portion of both frames and completely surround both of our main characters. Both are dressed in blue – she in a pretty blue dress, he in a threadbare blue work shirt – as colouristic contrasts to the yellow grain field and both have sunburned hands worn from work. Here the similarities end, however. He appears as a hardworking farmer whose face is hidden under the shade of the hat. He is deeply concentrated on his powerful dynamic swings with the scythe. In contrast, she is a lovely young country girl wearing a summer hat with pink ornamentations, a chalk-white apron and protective sleeves. With a slightly coy expression, she looks directly towards the viewer – as if she has just now stopped working. As Peter Hertz quite critically writes about \“The Harvest Girl\” in comparison with \“Harvest\” (in Danish): \“… and the young girl is no female equivalent to the harvest man – a female farmhand at work in the field. Instead, she is a beautiful model who knows she is good-looking and perhaps in honour of the painter she has been decorated with a pink bow on the straw hat. In other words, there is for once in Ring\’s work a greater degree of a superficial artistic Salon piece than an in-depth depiction of character." (Peter Hertz, p. 200). Yet, it is in many ways just this quality that makes "A Harvest Girl\” so interesting. L. A. Ring (b. Ring 1854, d. Roskilde 1933)
