Brockton Art Museum, The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Brooklyn Museum, October, 1985-July, 1986, catalogue number 18, illustrated on page 56.

N.B. Although the subject is enigmatic, it is possible that this work is
Samson and Child,
which was exhibited in 1883 at the J. Eastman Chase Gallery, Boston. With its theatrical lighting and diagonal composition leading to a distant conflagration, the painting relates to several other works of the 1850s including
Juliet and the Nurse.
Rimmer's use of allegory and highly personal symbolism is at its height in this composition.

Description:
william rimmer (1816-1879) battle of the amazons inscribed painted by dr. wm. rimmer/boston/given louise h. williams by/c.h.r. on the original stretcher affixed to the reverse oil on canvas 14 by 18 in. (35.6 by 45.7 cm.) painted circa 1875. william rimmer was a self-taught artist whose interest in such varied fields as painting, classical sculpture, medicine and teaching formed the basis for a career in both science and the arts. his family settled in south boston in 1825 and the young rimmer pursued a variety of trades and professions including sign painting, type setting and lithography. around 1841 he began studying medicine under dr. abel washburn kingman and his knowledge of anatomy is clearly evident in the heroic nudes of his paintings and in the modeling of his sculptures. inspired by the mythical subject matter of such artists as jean-leon gerome and william blake, rimmer went on to paint and sculpt in the european academic tradition, producing the majority of his known works after 1860. the artist also gained a reputation as a gifted teacher primarily on the basis of his dramatic lecture on artistic anatomy. jeffrey weidman writes about the present work, "battle of the amazons exhibits many of the qualities of rimmer's mature style: heavily muscled male nudes, emphasis on foreground, action concentrated in the center of the composition, and somber tones highlighted by touches of bright color. the action is depicted at its psychological peak. the spotlighting effect, often inadvertently accentuated by the darkening of bitumen, is another hallmark of rimmer's mature work ..." "battle of the amazons contains heroic male nudes derived from classical and renaissance sculptures. ... with the foreground nudes as a heroic setting, the amazon queen penthesilia, with decapitated heads hanging from her horse's saddle, is about to be slain by achilles as revenge for aiding the trojans after the death of hector. according to legend achilles fell in love with penthesilia at the moment he killed her. rimmer has silhouetted achilles's sword just before the fatal blow, a portent of the ironic reversal to come. although rimmer's specific reason for choosing this subject is not known, the legend suggests unfulfilled desire, the despair of loss, and unforeseen, irreversible fate." "themes derived from classical literature, ancient history, shakespearean drama, and the bible are a hallmark of rimmer's work, and his interpretations of these subjects often embrace personal symbolism. battle of the amazons is a fine, mature example in which form, light, and color emphasize the central group. small though the painting is, its forceful drawing, rich color, and energetic composition create a compelling image" (william rimmer: a yankee michelangelo, pp. 74-75). provenance: caroline hunt rimmer (the artist's daughter) louise h. williams, 1881 dr. g.g. sears, boston, massachusetts mr. and mrs. william j. gunn, newtonville, massachusetts richard s. nutt, providence, rhode island, 1958 hirschl & adler galleries, new york acquired by the present owner from the above, 1981 exhibited: boston, massachusetts, museum of fine arts, 1916 new york, whitney museum of american art; boston, massachusetts, museum of fine arts, 1946-1947, no. 21 boston, massachusetts, boston university school of fine and applied arts, boston painters 1720-1940, march 1968, no. 66 new haven, connecticut, yale university art gallery, american art from alumni collections, april-june 1968, no. 119, illustrated brockton, massachusetts, brockton art museum, fuller memorial; cleveland, ohio, the cleveland museum of art; brooklyn, new york, the brooklyn museum, william rimmer: a yankee michelangelo, october 1985-july 1986, no. 35, pp. 74-75, illustrated in color literature: truman h. bartlett, the art life of william rimmer: sculptor, painter, and physician, boston, massachusetts, 1882, p. 127 jeffrey weidman, william rimmer: critical catalogue raisonne, vol. ii, ph.d. dissertation, indiana university, bloomington, indiana, 1981, no. 115, pp. 677-82
