Pre-Lot Text PROPERTY FROM A CORPORATE COLLECTION View Lot Notes › Ferdinand Richardt traveled to the United States in 1855 upon receiving a commission from William Vanderbilt (1821-1885) to paint Niagara Falls. During the ensuing four years, he painted over one hundred views of the falls and other famous American landmarks and landscapes, including the Mississippi River and Mammoth Cave.

Melinda Young Stuart, co-author on "Danske herregårde og Amerika", 2003 suggests that the location can be identified as "View of the German Hotel and Bath House in Niagara town". That one exhibited Nygade 7, Copenhagen 1860 no. 25. This is a hotel near Niagara Falls on the New York state side located along the Rapids in the river above the falls. In the mid-19th century there were a number of historic hotels, many offering bathing opportunities, as shown here. Most of the very old hotels are now gone.

Oil on canvas. 76 x 118 cm. Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1846 no. 178. Leerhavn (Leerhamn) was a hamlet 4 miles south of Kullen.

Ferdinand Richardt is known for his views of Danish manor housesand as one of the first painters to have painted the Americanlandscape.
