Description:
Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659-1734 Venice) Pan oil on canvas 39¼ x 34¼ in. (100 x 88 cm.) Anonymous sale; Sotheby's, London, 5 July 1995, lot 75 (£32,200). PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION Ricci's colorful and robust depiction of Pan, the God of Woods and Fields, stresses his pointed ears, sharp horns and goat's legs, appropriate to his traditional allegorical role as the personification of Lust. He holds on his lap the syrinx, or reed pipes, whose music he entrusted to seduce the nymphs and Maenads of Arcadia, his happy realm. Ricci employed a favorite model to pose for Pan: his bald head and coarse, rustic features reappear in a number of Ricci's paintings from the middle of the 1720s, including The Patience of Job, a painting documented to 1725 and recorded by Daniels in the Medioli-Masotti Collection (J. Daniels, Sebastiano Ricci, 1976, no. 330, p. 95, fig. 227), and a magnificent drawing--very close to the present painting--in Windsor Castle (Daniels, fig. 229).
