They are sitting on a hill in front of a grainfield that keeps the eye of the beholder in the left half already in the foreground. As a contrast, in the right half a view on a wide, atmospheric subdued valley landscape is under a slightly clouded sky is given free. In fine brushstrokes the Austrian painter has worked out mainly in birds the texture the feathering, thus creating a harmonious and high quality animal representation. The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘C. Reichert 87’’’’. The canvas is relined, the layer of paint shows fine craquelure and is provided with a newer varnish. There are occasional spots of retouching. The overall condition is good. The frame, too, is in good condition with only minor signs of wear. The painting measures 48 x 64 cm. The framed dimensions are 65.5 x 80.5 cm. Carl Reichert (1836-1918) Carl Reichert was born in Vienna. His father Heinrich and two uncles were painters and thus he also studied at the Zeichenakademie in Graz where Joseph Ernst Tunner and Christian Moser were his teachers. Reichert went on study trips to Vienna, Munich and Rome. Initially he painted mainly landscapes and architecture. But after a successfully executed job for dog portraits, he turned increasingly to animal painting. Under the pseudonym J. Hartung, he mainly painted portraits of dogs and horses which enjoyed great popularity. He took part in the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 with four dog portraits. Since 1874, Reichert was a member of the Vienna Art Society. His paintings have been shown in numerous exhibitions. (fea)
