Description:
View from Greenland with Inuits in their boats in the sunset. Signed and [later] dated I. E. C. R. 1865. Oil on canvas. 32×51 cm. The present painting was later mistakenly dated 1865. The first time Rasmussen was in Greenland was in 1870, and there is no doubt that this is a work he painted after he had a chance to experience Greenland through his own eyes. One possible and more correct dating could, therefore, be 1885. The painting department is grateful to Ph D in history and curator at Marstal Søfartsmuseum (Maritime Museum) Karsten Hermansen for expert assistance. I. E. C. Rasmussen (b. Ærøskøbing 1841, d. The Atlantic Ocean 1893)
