Joseph Raphael (1869-1950): An Artistic Journey
, Nov. 18, 2003 -Jan. 3, 2004.
This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the work of Joseph Raphael by Dr. Phyllis Hattis and the family of Joseph Raphael.
One of the most important American artists to emerge from the Bay Area in the early twentieth century, Joseph Raphael left his native San Francisco in 1903 for Paris. That summer he discovered the town of Laren, Holland, where he resided often over the next eight years. He subsequently moved first to Uccle, a suburb of Brussels, and then to Oegstgeest, a suburb of Leiden. In 1939, he made a visit San Francisco, but was prevented from returning to Europe by the war, and thus was never reunited with his wife, who had remained behind. Raphael often shipped his works home to exhibitions during his years abroad. This was the case in 1912, when he sent a group of paintings he had created in Laren to a show at Halgreen & Marsh Galleries in San Francisco. The exhibition consisted mostly of Dutch interiors in the mode of such Hague School artists as Joseph Israels. A reviewer for the
San Francisco Chronicle
stated: "Laren offers unusual possibilities in atmosphere, and at this point Raphael has used his talents to depict the intimate scenes of Dutch existence. Many sketches are of interiors . . . Raphael has executed his work with vigor and a purity of coloring which have to be seen to be appreciated. Many are done in a low key . . . but these are wonderfully luminous without radiating color." (January 21, 1912, p. 45) The works on view may well have included
Blowing Bubbles
, dated 1910, which came to Spanierman Gallery from a California private collection.

Seascape exemplifies the forceful, faceted brushwork adopted by Joseph Raphael during World War I, a time when he was living in Uccle, a suburb of Brussels. The streak of light on the water cuts across the restless surface, like a ray of hope.
