This work shows the historic Mount Lyell Mine in 1951. The artist frequented Tasmania on several occasions and this work is without doubt his most major undertaking, showing the mine as it was in its early days of the late 1890s.
The work is an important historical record of our early mining history in Australia.
Mining records state the mine produced over a million tons of copper, 750 tons of silver and 45 tons of coal. The value of which when the records were taken in 1995 was over 4 billion dollars.
The mine indeed played an important role in the economy of Tasmania.

It is with great pleasure we offer the following work on behalf of a beneficiary from his estate.
Max Ragless was one of South Australia’s most energetic painters in oils and watercolours and a master in the art of etching. A most underrated artist working at a time that Heysen captured most of the attention.
Ragless, a self taught artist who worked in a very parochial state, today is being bought by art lovers who appreciate quality traditional work.
