Giuseppe Raggio (1823-1916) - Italian painter

Signed and dated 'G. Raggio Roma. 81'

Dimensions: 70.5 x 150.5 cm

Good condition

Provenance: Private collection, Schleswig-Holstein

Characteristic work by the Italian artist depicting horses and riders; comparable landscape paintings by Raggio fetch up to €13,000 on the international auction market
After his studies in Florence Giuseppe Raggio came to Rome and was struck by the rough beauty of the Lazio landscape. The present work depicts a typical subject matter in the artist's oeuvre. Raggio's works tell the story of the inhabitants of the Roman Campagna who live in the harsh countryside in communion with their herds of sheep, cows and horses. Raggio's works appear dynamic and modern with rapid brush strokes, sometimes smooth and sometimes rough, and vivid hues of greens and earthy grays and browns, able to render his figures and animals with a vigorous sculptural force.

The painting is signed and dated 'G. Raggio Roma. 81'. It is in good condition. There is a small hole at the lower left (Ø approx. 5 mm). There are smaller areas of retouching predominantly in the grass. The surface is overall a little browned. The frame shows losses along the edges. The framed work measures 82 x 163 cm, the stretcher frame measures 70.5 x 150.5 cm.

Giuseppe Raggio (1823-1916)

From 1845 onwards Giuseppe Raggio studied painting and exhibited his first works in Genoa. He attended the Accademia di belle Arti in Florence and was a student of Giuseppe Bezzuoli. Here he made the acquaintance of the painter Giovanni Fattori, founder of the Tuscan artists' group Macchiaioli. In Rome he met the landscape painter Giovanni Costa, who had a significant influence on Raggio's choice of subject matter. He continued to paint religious subjects but devoted himself increasingly to the subject of cattle farming, finding the motifs for his watercolors and oil paintings in the Lazio countryside. His works were shown in Dublin, Turin and Milan. In 1915 Raggio was honored with the Order of the Crown of Italy. (tfa)
